Nantucket Diet

The Nantucket Diet is a simple, wholesome, reduced-calorie diet with lots of tips to help you consume fewer calories. It starts with the basic premise that weight management requires a balance between calorie intake and energy expenditure. The diet was created by Dr. Sol Jacobs, an endocrinologist, and by Jane Conway Caspe, a fashion model with family ties to Nantucket.

BACKGROUND

The Nantucket aspect of the diet tries to capture the healthy, happy, natural, active lifestyle of Nantucket residents. The authors describe how the fishermen of the island, along with their families, lived an outdoorsy, active lifestyle intimately connected to their food source. The message seems to be that you, too, can be more involved with your local environment through walking and cycling or fishing and gardening. The book also includes many Nantucket recipes, both traditional and from local restaurants.

BASIC

The diet consists of three phases: ending weight gain, losing weight and maintaining weight. To begin the diet, you first need to determine your individual metabolism and your daily caloric requirements. This is determined by your height, weight, age, gender and activity level. The book contains an extensive list of the number of calories an average person burns while performing various activities. Once you determine how many calories you need, you may divide those calories throughout the day any way you'd like. The diet also requires a "make love to life" meal once every week. This is an "anything goes" meal where you can forget about counting calories or excluding certain food choices.
